Rob Riemen (1962) is an essayist and founding director of the internationally renowned Nexus Institute in Tilburg. In De eeuwige terugkeer van het fascisme (‘The perpetual comeback of fascism’) Riemen writes about the cultural history of fascism, and mirrors this to the present-day Dutch society. Modern day fascism must not be compared to where it ended in the 20th century, but where it started.
On this year’s Lowlands festival, Riemen held a lecture called Why have we forgotten what’s important in our lives? about aforementioned subject.
He closed his argument with a reference to the well-known Dutch politician Geert Wilders, which he called the general of a growing army of dumb individuals: ”The battle against fascism begins with the battle against stupidity… inside ourselves! Dare to think, dare to be critical and cherish the arts. Resist stupidity and be brave!”
After the Lowlands lecture, a public debate took place within various media. What’s the cultural history of fascism and of present-day politics? Does a cultural organisation need to engage in such a particular way? What’s the role of intellectuals and media in this debate? In a conversation at Incubate with ‘De Groene Amsterdammer’-editor and writer Joost de Vries, Rob Riemen will elaborate on these themes. The conversation will be called Why Deny Fascism?
Incubate Festival consciously chooses to highlight this topic. “This year’s Incubate central theme is We Are Incubate. This includes new forms of collaboration within the cultural section. But if you’re an open organisation, you may also indicate the consequences of exclusion” says Joost Heijthuijsen of Incubate. “Openness leads to trust and creativity. Closeness induces fear.” Also, the theme connects flawless with the engagement of the performing artists. Visitors to the Incubate Festival can also attend a program curated by Steve Ignorant (singer of the legendary anti-fascist punkband Crass) later that day.
