Incubate is the annual celebration of independent culture in Tilburg, the Netherlands. It is a festival exhibiting a diverse view on indie culture as a whole, including music, contemporary dance, film and visual arts. It brings more than 200 cutting edge artists in an intimate context to an international audience. Black metal next to free jazz. Refreshing art next to inspiring debate.

Pirate Cinema

The full range of piracy gets shown at this year’s INCUBATE film program. From Mockbusters (or tie-ins, as they call them) to remakes, sweded versions, re-cuts and found footage, the re-use of already existing material is abundant here. Creative re-use of scripts, names and concept imagery is one of the factors of Piracy we try to highlight at this year’s festival in all disciplines and what better way to show it than in film!

Think of Turkish remakes of Star Trek, The Exorcist and E.T., Indian remakes of Superman and Fright Night or the Brazilian version of Star Wars. The latter was released even before the original version and contained all Star Wars characters, but also an abundance of self fabricated elements, strange scenes, songs and dance and weird special effects. The film turned out to be a bigger hit in South America than the original version and was made in less than a month with hardly any budget. Pirate Cinema will show several of these remakes.

We’ll also be hosting a special around one of the most hated film studios in Hollywood: The Asylum! These guys produce “Mockbusters”, often made with a low budget, created with the apparent intention of piggy-backing on the publicity of a major film with a similar title or theme. Often these films are created to be released direct-to-video at the same time as the mainstream film reaches theaters or video outlets. They will also present the premiére of Titanic II, a long awaited sequel to the 90’s blockbuster! The entrance to Pirate Cinema is free.
